At Greythorn Primary School in Years 5 and 6, we follow a two-year course called "Exploring French" which comprises a text book and an activity book. While the activity books are a class set, the text book is owned personally by each student and must be retained at the end of Year 5. Each student receives one and a half hours of French per week.

The course covers all major junior secondary topics and thus, combined with quite an in-depth study of important grammatical aspects, prepares your child very soundly for Year 7 and Year 8 French. We reprise several topics covered in Years 3 and 4, but in far greater detail with a more grammatical bent.

In Semester 2, at the Year 6 level, topics are treated extremely seriously and are over and above what is included in "Exploring French". Such studies are the concept of regular and irregular verbs (in particular the four basic irregular verbs) and the conjugation of same, adjectival agreements and the consequences of these.

On a cultural note, this being an essential part of any Language Other Than English (LOTE) course, we look at Festivals, the French Revolution, and a continued study of France, French customs and the French-speaking world in general. In Year 5, students will be introduced to Impressionist Art in general and Monet in particular. Grade 6 students will carry out a hands-on study of La Cuisine française, some of which will be done at home with your encouragement!

Every child in Years 5 and 6 memorises a poem as part of their assessment. The poems are those set by the Alliance Française de Melbourne and all Years 5 and 6 students are strongly encouraged to enter this long-established poetry recitation competition, which usually takes place here at school in May/June.

All French classes are taught by Madame Sally Holt in the French Room, Room 50.
