Performing Arts

pa1 pa2

Students at Greythorn attend a weekly Music Session offering opportunities for creative self-expression while building skills in musical literacy and confidence in composition and performance.   Students learn to play recorder and marimba as well as a variety of other percussion instruments.  All students from Prep to Year 6 experience creative dance, and drama skills are developed through a variety of theatre games.

The school has a Junior Choir (Year 3/4) and a Senior Choir (Year 5/6) and our Senior Choir has won First Place in several Eisteddfods over the last few years. Students may perform in the Recorder and Percussion Ensemble and the school Orchestra, the GYPSIES, and instrumental tuition is available after-school.  Regular performance opportunities for students include School Concerts, Productions, Arts Festivals and school Assemblies.

SENIOR CHOIR

On Thursday 7th  May, the Senior Choir performed at the Boroondara Eisteddfod. We had a short practice in the hall before getting on the bus that would take us to the heats of this competition.  We got out of the bus 15 minutes later to find ourselves outside a huge building that would decide our fate. We stepped into the practice room, which already held two other choirs. The other choirs left the room and soon after we had a short warm up before a volunteer showed us to the stage. We were shivering with nerves as we walked up the stairs to the stage. We saw the adjudicator on the table in the middle of the seating in the audience.  After the introduction we started to sing beautifully with a gentle song called Snowgum followed by an energetic song called Look at us Now. We left the stage and watched the other choirs perform and then the big moment came. The finalists for the 2009 Eisteddfod where announced and Greythorn Primary School was one of them! We started clapping and cheering and we left in a great mood for our journey back.  I’m sure that, that moment will be remembered forever. But that’s not all.  On Friday evening we performed as part of the Schools’ Out on Stage Yooralla fundraising concert.   It was a fantastic concert with so many great choirs performing. The audience loved our performance, especially the Fred Astaire dance routine during ‘Stepping Out’.  The audience clapped along and applauded enthusiastically at the end.  A number of people came up to us afterwards and said how much they loved it.  It was great to be part of a fun musical event that also helped others. We would like to thank Brett Rosenberg for playing the piano, Marita Rosenberg for page turning, Mrs Miller and Mrs Poulton for helping out and Mrs Odou for conducting and helping us prepare for our performances.  Ellie and Hugh, Music Captains.
