Chess State Champions

We did it! The Greythorn Primary School Chess Team are the official State Champions of Chess for 2012.

We did it!  The Greythorn Primary School Chess Team are the official State Champions of Chess for 2012.  In a very tense finish to an exciting State Finals competition, our team scored 28 out of a possible 35 points, taking out first place ahead of Mount View PS (27.5) and Deepdene PS (25.5). This result has qualified our team of Enoch F (6A), Tristan K (6V), Phoebe F (4P), Timothy K (5B) and Justin Z (6A) to represent Victoria at the 2012 Australian Schools Team Chess Championships in Canberra on December 1st & 2nd.   This marks the second time in the past five years that Greythorn has claimed the title of Victorian Champions.  Our team comprised of Bobby C, Stephen L, Zheng Y, Jackson H and a very young Enoch won the State Championship in 2008.  That team went on to claim third place in the 2008 National Finals in Adelaide.  Our current team will be looking to achieve another podium position at the Nationals this year, already dreaming of a possible 2012 Australian Title.

The Greythorn team was once again superbly lead at the State Finals by Enoch who scored a perfect 7 points on board 1.  The Dragon, as he is affectionately known in Greythorn Chess Club circles, has not been beaten in a single chess match in interschool competitions this year.  Tristan also performed exceptionally well at the finals, scoring 6 points on board 2 while strong play from Phoebe (5 points) on board 3 and Timothy (4 points) on board 4 were also crucial to our team’s success.  Justin proved to be the GPS x-factor with a marvellous result of 6 points on board 5.  Enoch, Tristan and Justin were each awarded special trophies for being the highest scoring players on boards 1, 2 and 5 respectively.

The Greythorn Chess Team has now won both the Chess Kids and Chess Victoria State Titles for 2012 – an outstanding achievement.

I would like to say a very big thank you to Tanya Krstevski for the many hours she has put into training our chess team after school on Tuesday afternoons this year.  Thanks also to George Fan for his assistance on Friday and to Darryl and Marcus for the excellent coaching they have provided at Chess Club this year.
